For denitrification, anoxic MBBR tanks are used. The anoxic tank is similar to aerobic
MBBR tanks except that no oxygen is supplied. The tank contains no diffusers and the media is kept in suspension in the reactor through submersible mixers. Other features are the same as in the aerobic reactor although the design may be slightly different.
[8] also studied pulp and paper mill wastewater in a MBBR pilot plant with 20 m3, an average hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 3.3 h and a FR of 10%, is possible to observe high levels of biomass adherence. Regarding urban wastewater, Calderón et al. [9], concluded that for FR 50% a more mature and better colonized biofilm on the carrier surface would be obtained.

Tube-shaped carriers: Long, narrow tube-shaped carriers offer an extended MBBR media surface area for microorganism growth. Their shape also helps them suspend evenly within the water column instead of stacking on top of one another. Because of their hollow forms, though, they can sometimes become susceptible to fouling.
