With MBBR working principle, it provides benefits all together on the attached and
suspended growth systems. MBBR media manufacturers ensures to offer and advanced first class wastewater treatment technology at expected high efficiency.
A bed of MBBR media generally consists of thousands of tiny pieces that suspend themselves throughout a wastewater treatment tank, typically taking up about 50% to 70% of the available space. Their design makes them optimal for hosting beneficial bacteria and promoting their growth. Many types of MBBR media resemble wheel-shaped pasta, with the spokes of the wheel providing valuable surface area for bacterial growth. Others are thin, coin-shaped discs or squares.
Having a sieve on the outlet of the tank will add a better performance and is plainly necessary to put hold on the plastic carriers from breaking free of the aeration process.

Problems caused by a decrease in biodegradation efficiency are largely a consequence of an intense thickness of the biofilms, resulting in a reduction of the active carrier surface area. The MBBR BioChip 30 does not have this issue. Its process is very different in that the biofilms, which colonize the pores of the BioChip and which try to grow out of the pores, are kept constantly thin by shear forces. These shear forces evolve on the outsides of the carrier elements due to their movement in the water, and provide the self-cleaning effect of the MBBR BioChip 30. Consequently, the biofilms remain thin as they are protected from the shear forces only inside the pores. Thin biofilms are crucial for an optimal supply of the microorganisms with substrates (removable pollutants and nutrients) as well as with the oxygen required for the aerobic biodegradation processes. In this way, the MBBR BioChip 30 allows for constantly high biological removal rates and reliable process stability.

The MBBR process is an attached growth
biological wastewater treatment process. That is, the microorganisms that carry out the
treatment are attached to a solid medium, as in trickling filter or RBC systems. By
contrast, in a suspended growth biological wastewater treatment process, like the
activated sludge process, the microorganisms that carry out the treatment are kept
suspended in the mixed liquor in the aeration tank.
