MBBR activated sludge is the application of MBBR media in the upgrading and transformation of overload treatment plants.

In order to reduce the volume requirement of activated sludge nitrification, a new process is proposed, namely the biofilm-activated sludge-innovative nitrification process, which consists of a moving bed biofilm reactor with separate heterotrophic waste (MBBR) an activated sludge method. The basic principle is to remove the chemical oxygen demand on the biofilm carrier through heterotrophic organisms, and then waste a part of the heterotrophic biomass before it can be released into the MBBR activated sludge reactor. In this way, the number of heterotrophs growing in the activated sludge reactor is reduced, thereby reducing the pool volume required for nitrification. For nitrification applications, the easiest way to strip biomass is to use aerated high shear rate in-cell technology. A small-scale test showed that the sludge output of the pool process is half that of the activated sludge control process, and twice that of the process line of MBBR and the intermediate settlement of the activated sludge section. The nitrification reactors of the three production lines have the same critical flushing solids retention time. Therefore, compared with the control, the volume of activated sludge in the basin process can be reduced by 50%.

 

Activated sludge process and MBBR

Activated sludge process (ASP) has some similarities with MBBR. In this traditional process, wastewater enters an aeration tank with high oxygen content. This oxygen helps the growth of microorganisms and the decomposition of organic waste. Then, the water enters a sedimentation tank, and the remaining waste in the water will be separated from the water to make it cleaner.

The activated sludge method is an effective biological wastewater treatment method. However, studies have shown that under optimal conditions, MBBR can more effectively remove chemical oxygen demand and handle organic loads more effectively than ASP. MBBR takes advantage of the same advantages offered by ASP and provides additional advantages that make it a superior technology.
