The flake clarifier can increase the settlement area by 5 to 10 times! It is also advantageous that the incoming water will be slowed down and redirected to the flow between the flakes and plates, which improves the flow pattern.
In general, the lamella plate settler is a good solution for upgrading existing sedimentation tanks. Compared with conventional sedimentation tanks, the installation speed is significantly faster, and the total cost is about 1/3.
The theory behind both Lamella Plates in water treatment plant and a lamella unit is very similar, with this change: Although the water rises as before and the particles settle as before, the water is flowing inside a tube or channel that is set at a 45 degree (or so) angle. The water will have to travel several feet from the entrance of the tube to the exit, but particles will only have to fall a couple of inches before they hit the bottom of the tube or plate and start agglomerating -- so the size can be greatly reduced.

Clarifiers/basins equipped with tube settlers can operate at 2 to 4 times the normal rate of clarifiers/basins without tube settlers.
However, even the best tube settler design might clog if not regularly maintained. Depending on the application tube settlers should be checked between once per month and once per year. If the water turbidity is so high that tube settlers are not visible from the water surface, the basin must be drained so that the water level is at least underneath the tube settler blocks. Alternatively, tube settler basins can be equipped with a single retrievable tube settler block which allows inspection of sludge accumulation during operation and without basin dewatering.
