The thin biofilm on the element enables bacteria to act on the biodegradable substances in the wastewater and reduce the BOD / COD content in the presence of oxygen in the air for fluidization. The treated water flows through the grid or sieve from the reactor, thereby retaining the MBBR biocarrier in the reactor. The system can be composed of a one-stage or two-stage treatment process according to the specific needs of wastewater.
Each MBBR BioChip 30 media has a very low mass compared to its size. Consequently, the impulse transferred when contact is made with another carrier element is insignificant thus drastically reducing abrasion and wear. Other tubular carrier types (often injection-molded and heavy related to their size) conversely break after a certain time in operation leaving carrier parts on the water surface in the clarifiers of wastewater treatment plants.
The media is continuously agitated by bubbles from the aeration system that adds oxygen at the bottom of the first compartment of the aeration tank. The microorganisms consume organic material. When compared to conventional secondary treatment it provides superior efficiency and value.

The MBBR system is considered a biofilm process. Other conventional biofilm processes for wastewater treatment are called trickling filter, rotating biological contactor (RBC) and biological aerated filter (BAF). Biofilm processes in general require less space than activated sludge systems because the biomass is more concentrated, and the efficiency of the system is less dependent on the final sludge separation. A disadvantage with other biofilm processes is that they experience bioclogging and build-up of headloss.
