There you have it. Four misconceptions about MBBR in wastewater treatment. Hopefully, this clears things up for those that need it.mbbr4-5

 

The MBBR system consists of an aeration tank (similar to an activated sludge tank) with special plastic carriers that provide a surface where a biofilm can grow. The carriers are made of a material with a density close to the density of water (1 g/cm3). An example is high-density polyethylene (HDPE) which has a density close to 0.95 g/cm3. The carriers will be mixed in the tank by the aeration system and thus will have good contact between the substrate in the influent wastewater and the biomass on the carriers.

 

Can be utilized in New or Old Bio Reactors and enhance the performance. Once the moving bed bio filter media is placed inside a Bio Reactor and set in proper operation, you have a compact stabile, clog-free bio-film reactor.

 

This also ensure the substrate can transfer through diffusion into deeper biofilm layers. Due to the material thickness of approx. 1.1 mm of the carrier media, the diffusion depth of approx. 0.5 mm on both sides of the carrier is not being exceeded. This fully meets the requirements of an optimal habitat in the form of a special pore system having a depth of approx. 0.5 mm on or in the MBBR BioChip 30, respectively.

 

The microorganisms consume organic material. The media provides increased surface area for the biological microorganisms to attach and grow. The increased surface area reduces the footprint of the tanks required to treat the wastewater. The treatment process can be aerobic and/or anaerobic and operates at high volume loads.

 

The special shape and specific gravity of the colonized MBBR BioChip 30 provide unique motion characteristics which require less agitation energy in the form of process air supply in order to keep the carrier suspended in the wastewater. By using the MBBR BioChip 30 Wastewater treatment operators will benefit from significant savings in operational expenditure.
