According to the growth of microorganisms, sewage biological treatment systems can be divided into two types: suspended growth type (such as activated sludge method and MBR method) and biofilm growth type (such as trickling filter, fixed biological filter and HDPE MBBR media). Biofilm has a high organic load and strong resistance to environmental changes and toxic chemicals. However, it also has some shortcomings, such as dead spots in the reaction tank, bloodworms and flies like to eat biofilms, resulting in a decline in the effectiveness of the biological treatment system, and the unpleasant feeling of these worms, mosquitoes, and flies around. The main disadvantage of the activated sludge method is the management of sludge. When the F/M ratio is too high, the nitrification performance is poor; when the F/M ratio is too low, sludge expansion will occur, which will affect the effluent quality. Therefore, ASP makes operators spend more energy to maintain the system.
HDPE MBBR media practice is to put a carrier with a specific geometric shape into the aeration tank of the wastewater/sewage biological treatment system. The carrier has a high specific surface area, allowing microorganisms to attach, grow and form a biofilm. In addition, the size and density of MBBR carriers are similar to those of water, so if they are properly stirred or aerated, they can be uniformly suspended in water. At the same time, since the carrier is in a continuous motion state, the biofilm on the carrier can evenly contact the body, which helps to obtain a good mass transfer effect.
The MBBR process has the advantages of high biofilm load and stable treatment effect, while maintaining the good mass transfer performance of the activated sludge method. Therefore, there are more than 1,000 engineering achievements on MBBR in the world.
