The basic design concept of the MBBR is continuous operation, no clogging, no backwash, low head loss and a large specific surface area. This can be achieved by growing biofilms on smaller carrier units that move freely with the flow of water in the reactor. In the aerobic reactor, the carrier is pushed to move by aeration. In anoxic/anaerobic reactors, the carrier is moved by mechanical agitation. To prevent loss of filler in the reactor, a porous filter screen can be installed at the outlet of the reactor (FIG. 1). MBBR is generally rectangular or cylindrical in shape. The rectangular reactor is evenly divided into several compartments or non-compartments along the length of the pond. On the whole, the water flow is pushed in the reactor, but in each cell, due to aeration, the water flow is completely mixed. The cell was filled with polyethylene or polypropylene suspension fillers whose specific gravity was close to that of water and whose specific surface area was large. The attached surface of biofilm in the reactor was up to 500m2/m3, and the actual specific surface area (the inner surface of the fillers) was up to 350m2/m3. The perforated aeration pipe aerates on one side to circulate the packing in the tank. The bottom of the cylindrical reactor is provided with a microporous aeration head. In addition, some reactors are equipped with not only aeration devices but also agitation devices at the bottom of the tank. These stirring devices allow the reactor to be easily and flexibly used in anoxic conditions. Sometimes a cap may be placed over the reactor to prevent lift and volatilization from aeration.
