MBBR stands for Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor, which uses a free-floating plastic film media to allow microorganisms to attach and grow. The plastic film media in it needs to be kept in suspension, so the density of the material needs to be close to that of water, and continuous aeration makes good contact between the pollutants and the attached biofilm, thus effectively removing BOD.
Features of MBBR: 1. simple construction and easy operation. 2. high efficiency of organic matter removal, good effect of nitrogen removal and phosphorus removal. 3. not easy to clog, no need for regular backwashing. 4. sedimentation process is required at the end of treatment. MBR stands for membrane bioreactor, a process combining ion exchange membrane technology with activated sludge. Most of the membrane bioreactors are submerged in the wastewater and treat the organic matter in the wastewater by microorganisms that grow attached to the membrane surface. characteristics of MBR: 1. able to operate at high volumetric load, low sludge load, low residual sludge production (theoretically zero sludge discharge can be achieved), reducing sludge treatment cost. 2. able to maintain high MLSS concentration in the reactor, high volumetric load of the treatment unit, thus 3. High microbial load requires sufficient aeration and therefore higher operating energy consumption. 4. Easy to cause membrane contamination and requires regular membrane cleaning or backwashing. fBR fixed bed biofilm reactor, which works similar to MBBR, the difference is that the biofilm is attached to a fixed solid material block. The aeration under the solid material block provides the oxygen required for the growth of biofilm and controls the cleaning of membrane block. characteristics of FBR: 1. can adapt to wastewater with large variations in influent volume and organic matter content. 2. easier to operate than MBBR and lower energy consumption (because of direct aeration at the bottom)
