Optional Dual-Purpose Media
Some owners prefer to use sponge and cushion materials as mechanical and biological media.
When using dual-purpose media, you need several layers, preferably varying degrees of roughness.
Put the thickest material first.
Since the sponge is both a mechanical medium and a biological medium, each layer should be cleaned at a different time.
By disrupting the cleaning plan, they will have time to refill the cleaned area.
In this way, the overall damage to the colony is less.
Biomedia
Biological media is usually placed after mechanical media and before chemical media.
The biomedium cannot be clogged because it is the correct substrate for beneficial bacterial colonies.
If blocked, the flow of oxygen will be blocked, putting the bacterial colonies in danger of death.
Biological filtration media are like condominiums for bacteria.
Types include ceramic rings, sponges, pads, bio balls and bio stars, sand and gravel.
Keep in mind that some of these materials can also be used as mechanical media.
These porous objects have a high surface area while still allowing water and light to pass through them;
They provide excellent shelter for bacteria.
Different kinds of bacteria grow into healthy colonies all over the surface of the biological culture medium.
There, they help break down (eat) various toxins in the aquarium water.
Ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite-loving bacteria will remove large amounts of these toxins, just as they do in natural ecosystems.
Bacterial colonies also consume dissolved organic solids such as proteins, sugars and other carbon-containing compounds.
