MBBR bio media is an improved version of fixed membrane bioreactor, similar to SAFF (surface area fixed membrane technology (SAFF) or rotating bioreactor (RBC), except that the MBBR carrier medium floats freely in sewage/sewage. MBBR bio media reactor consists of a storage tank filled with immersed plastic (usually HDPE, polyethylene or polypropylene) medium with a specific gravity less than 1.0. The large surface area of plastic provides sufficient surface for the growth of bacteria. Biomass grows on the surface in the form of a thin film, and its thickness is usually between 50-300 microns. Each individual biological carrier increases productivity by providing a protected surface area to support the growth of heterotrophic and autotrophic bacteria within its cells. It is this high-density bacterial population that achieves high-speed biodegradation in the system, while also providing process reliability and ease of operation. The medium or coarse bubble diffuser placed uniformly at the bottom of the reactor maintains the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration> 2.5-3 mg/L to remove BOD. For nitrification, a high dissolved oxygen concentration is still maintained. In order to keep the medium flowing out of the tank, a strainer is installed on the downstream wall. A clarifier or DAF is placed downstream of the filter MBBR tank to separate the biomass and solids from the wastewater. This process does not require sludge recovery.
