What is MBBR technology in wastewater treatment plants (STP) and what is the purpose of MBBR media carriers?
MBBR media beds typically consist of thousands of small pieces that are suspended throughout the wastewater treatment tank, typically occupying about 50% to 70% of the available space. Their design makes them optimal for holding beneficial bacteria and promoting their growth. Many types of MBBR media resemble wheel-shaped spaghetti, with the spokes of the wheel providing valuable surface area for bacterial growth. Others are thin, coin-shaped discs or squares.
MBBR media carriers are ideal for use in aeration basins. They are dispersed throughout the pool and their bacteria help break down solid waste. The media are so effective because they are designed to provide a large surface area for beneficial microorganisms, so they help increase the number of bacteria available to digest the waste.
How do MBBR media carriers work?
In an aeration tank, tiny pieces of MBBR are scattered throughout the wastewater and their huge surface area provides a good environment for microbial growth. The biofilm that grows on the media then decomposes the waste in the tank.
A diffuser delivers oxygen into the cell to promote continued microbial growth, and a mesh screen in the cell helps prevent the media carriers from running off with the wastewater. the density of the MBBR media carriers is similar to that of water, so they mix well with the wastewater to promote continued digestion of the waste.
The use of MBBR media is particularly beneficial because these small pieces take up minimal space, are easy to maintain, and digest waste efficiently. The microorganisms on the media can also automatically adjust to changes in the amount and type of waste in the water. Although MBBR systems require some monitoring, they are largely self-sufficient.
