What is MBBR Wastewater Treatment?

 

A moving bed biofilm reactor is a biological wastewater treatment process, which means it is a natural process that uses biofilms to remove waste from wastewater. Microorganisms attached to the media in the water consume the unwanted waste and make the water cleaner.

 

This technology emerged in Norway in the late 1980s and has since become a popular means of wastewater treatment due to some of the significant benefits it offers. This process provides a safe and environmentally sustainable means of removing organic matter, measured in terms of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and achieving nitrification and denitrification.

 

MBBR can be used as a stand-alone process, but it is often part of a more comprehensive wastewater treatment program. It is usually not the first or last method of treating wastewater, but plays an important role as part of a multi-step purification approach. This is why you will find many MBBR process flow diagrams that include other steps, such as desanding or disinfection in addition to the MBBR aeration tank.

 

How does MBBR wastewater treatment work?

 

In MBBR wastewater treatment, a reactor, or basin, is filled with water and thousands of small plastic pieces called carriers or media. These media look like hexagonal wheels and are specially designed to provide the perfect surface for waste-consuming microorganisms to thrive. These pieces form a biofilm that provides a solution for removing waste from the water.

 

These carriers are made of a plastic material with a density similar to that of water, which allows the media to be suspended uniformly throughout the water. In addition, at the bottom of the reactor, an aeration grid keeps the media active throughout the wastewater so that they can reach all the wastes in the water. As the pieces flow through the wastewater, the microorganisms living on the media consume the wastes in the water. A screen keeps the media from escaping through the outlet of the tank.
